Because my daughter has Celiac Disease and my husband has Ulcerative Colitis they both use probiotics daily to help restore "friendly flora" in their intestines. Many probiotic products are available to choose from but CocoKefir is the first I have heard of that comes in the form of a beverage made from young coconut water. When I was given the opportunity to review CocoKefir and asked my husband and daughter to try it instead of the probiotics that they were currently using they were both on board. My husband had been using capsules and my daughter had been using chewables so the CocoKefir probiotic beverage was quite a change for them.
According to the CocoKefir website benefits of CocoKefir include:
• Promotes balanced flora in the G.I. tract, improving digestion and immune defense
• Reduces sugar cravings
• Contains valuable nutrients such as potassium, magnesium, and manganese
• Increases energy and overall feeling of good health
"CocoKefir beverages are powerful fermented foods - raw, unpasteurized with no preservatives. Never diluted with filtered water or flavored with additives, CocoKefir is always made with 100% raw young coconut water (often mistakenly referred to as coconut juice) and/or other organic juice (depending on product)."
CocoKefir is both gluten and dairy free.
After tasting CocoKefir my young daughter decided that she didn't care for the taste and wanted to stick with her chewable probiotics. My husband mentioned that the taste of CocoKefir did not appeal to him either, but agreed to continue using it; he said it would be worth it to him if he noticed that he felt better than when using his capsules.
After a month of using CocoKefir my husband said that he felt he achieved the same level of results from CocoKefir as he had from his probiotic capsules. He decided to return to using his capsules because the taste of the CocoKefir reminded him of bicarbonate of soda (without the bubbles).
I tasted the CocoKefir for myself and I have to agree that even the flavored versions of Citrus and Apple Cinnamon were quite bitter tasting. However, people's taste buds are different and there well may be many individuals who enjoy the flavor of CocoKefir and prefer a probiotic beverage over swallowing probiotic capsules. Keep in mind that many people have reported profound benefits from using CocoKefir - you can read their testimonials on the CocoKefir website.
Bottom line? CocoKefir maintained the level of intestinal health that my husband had achieved from already taking probiotics; had he enjoyed its taste he may have opted to continue using it. I recommend that you try one bottle of Coco Kefir to form your own opinion prior to purchasing large quantities of it, especially if you intend to give it to finicky children.
